Mumbai Special Court Grants BJP MP Pragya Thakur Medical Exemption in Malegaon Blast Case
A Mumbai special court has granted BJP MP Pragya Thakur’s request for exemption from appearing in the Malegaon blast case on medical grounds. However, the court warned that if she fails to appear on April 25, necessary action will be taken.
The Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, 2008, resulting in six fatalities and over 100 injuries. On April 8, Special NIA Judge A K Lahoti relied on a compliance report from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) regarding Thakur’s medical condition and granted her exemption but instructed her to attend court without fail on April 20.
However, during Saturday’s proceedings, Thakur’s lawyer filed an application seeking further exemption, citing her critical medical condition. The plea expressed hope for her presence on April 25.
The NIA objected to Thakur’s plea, pointing out that her medical certificate did not specify her inability to travel from Bhopal to Mumbai.
After hearing both sides, the court observed that Thakur’s medical certificate indicated the need for therapeutic intervention for about a week. Considering this and the submissions made by her advocate, the court allowed her exemption as a final chance but directed her to appear on or before April 25, warning of necessary action otherwise.
The case is registered as Special Case 100001/2016, titled National Investigation Agency v. Pragyasingh Chandrapalsingh Thakur and Ors.
