Prime Minister Narendra Modi Congratulates Donald Trump on 2024 Election Victory, Emphasizes Strengthening India-US Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 U.S. Presidential election, marking his return as the 47th President.

PM Modi expressed eagerness to continue their partnership and strengthen the India-U.S. ties, emphasizing the importance of promoting global peace, stability, and prosperity amidst ongoing conflicts such as those in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Through a post on X, Modi wrote: “Heartiest congratulations, my friend @realDonaldTrump, on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability, and prosperity.

The relationship between Trump and Modi has been marked by strong diplomatic ties, mutual admiration, and strategic cooperation. Their bond was highlighted in events like “Howdy, Modi!” in Houston (2019) and “Namaste Trump” in Ahmedabad (2020), where they addressed large crowds, reflecting their personal camaraderie.

In terms of strategic alignment, both leaders focused on defense and security, particularly in their shared stance against terrorism. They also collaborated on maintaining a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” working together to counter China’s influence through joint military exercises and the Quad alliance, which includes the U.S., Japan, Australia, and India.

Trade relations, however, were a point of contention. Trump’s “America First” policy led to disputes over tariffs, though both countries sought fairer trade terms. During the Covid-19 pandemic, India and the U.S. extended their cooperation in the health sector, with India supplying hydroxychloroquine and the U.S. supporting India’s response efforts.
