Madras High Court Issues Strong Warning to Prison Authorities Over Misconduct
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court delivered a firm message to prison officials, emphasizing that they should not misuse their authority. A division bench, consisting of Justices S. M. Subramaniam and V. Sivagnanam, made this statement while addressing a petition from S. Kalavathi, who sought action regarding her son Sivakumar, a life convict incarcerated at the Central Prison in Vellore.
In her petition, Kalavathi claimed her son was assaulted by prison wardens due to unfounded theft allegations related to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons. She further alleged that he was placed in solitary confinement and forced to perform domestic duties at the DIG’s residence. The court’s remarks underscore the need for accountability among prison officials and the protection of inmates’ rights.
