Violence Escalates in Bangladesh: 20 Awami League Leaders Found Dead Amid Attacks on Hindus
In Bangladesh, violence has surged following the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulting in widespread chaos and targeted attacks. Recently, twenty leaders of the Awami League have been discovered dead across the country as unrest continues. The violence, initially triggered by protests over a job quota system favoring the children of freedom fighters, has also targeted minority communities, particularly Hindus.
On Tuesday, parts of the Awami League’s central office in Dhaka were set ablaze for the second time in two days. Eyewitnesses reported that a mob torched the residence of former councillor Md Shah Alam in Comilla city, located about 100 kilometers from Dhaka. In another incident, a fire set by a mob at the home of MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul resulted in the deaths of four individuals, whose bodies were found in different parts of the burned building.
The violent protests have led to extensive vandalism and looting of properties belonging to Awami League leaders and activists. The situation reflects increasing instability and turmoil in the nation as the unrest shows no signs of abating.
Amid the escalating violence, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka remains operational. Indian nationals in Bangladesh have been provided with helpline numbers for assistance. While non-essential staff and their families have been evacuated, diplomatic operations continue.
The helpline numbers for the Indian High Commission are: +8801958383679, +8801958383680, and +8801937400591.
