14 People Sentenced to Life for 2009 Murder of Man in Odisha’s Gajapati District

In a notable ruling, a court in Odisha’s Gajapati district has sentenced 14 people to life imprisonment for the murder of a man that took place nearly 15 years ago

On Thursday, Additional District Judge (ADJ) Pradeep Kumar Samal convicted 16 people for the brutal assault on Siba Nagabansa, which resulted in his death. The incident occurred at Nagabansa’s home in Ghasi Sahi of Paralakhemundi on March 12, 2009, during Holi, and was reportedly driven by prior animosity.

Two of the accused have passed away since the crime, while the remaining 14 have been sentenced to life in prison, according to public prosecutor Brundaban Nayak. In addition to the life sentences, the court has imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on each of the convicted individuals.

The attack took place when the accused forcibly entered Nagabansa’s home and assaulted him as he slept after celebrating Holi. Nagabansa succumbed to his injuries six days later while receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

An FIR was filed against the accused on the day of the incident, and they were subsequently arrested. The police submitted a charge sheet on August 9, 2010. The accused had been released on bail prior to the trial.
